About Habersham County
Resting in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is Georgia’s forty-sixth county, Habersham. Officially founded in 1817, Habersham County was named after Revolutionary War hero Colonel Joseph Habersham of the Continental Army. Habersham County was initially more extensive, but over time, it shrunk to 279 square miles as parts of it were used to form Banks, Lumpkin, Stephens, White, and Rabun neighboring counties.
With breathtaking views, arts, fairs, festivals, diverse shopping, and dining experiences, Habersham County has a little bit of something for everyone. Habersham is home to the Tallulah Gorge State Park—A prominent tourist attraction that features a scenic gorge, hiking trails, and a string of six waterfalls, known as the Tallulah Falls. The numerous overlooks in the park provide multiple incredible viewpoints to see the stunningness of the Gorge. Several museums play an integral role in preserving the authentic culture, heritage, and history of Habersham County. Here, you’ll find the Cornelia Railroad Depot Museum, the Johnny Mize Museum, the Loudermilk Boarding House Museum, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Mauldin House Visitors Center, to name a few.
Several annual events, fairs, and festivals keep the county bubbly and lively throughout the year. There’s the Chattahoochee Mountain Fair each September in Clarkesville, the Big Red Apple Festival during October in Cornelia, the Mountain Laurel Festival each May in Clarkesville, the Northeast Georgia Antique Car and Truck Show each August in Clarkesville, and many others. Access to public health care and quality education facilities isn’t an issue here. The Habersham County Medical Center and the Habersham County Health Department cater to the public’s health care needs while there are 14 public education facilities.
You have an abundance of eight (8) elementary schools, three (3) middle schools, one (1) ninth-grade academy, one (1) high school, and two (2) other higher learning institutions: The Piedmont College and The North Georgia Technical College.
