About Stephens County
Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains foothills located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia is Stephens County. Stephens County has its land taken from Habersham and Franklin counties and was among four counties created on the same day in August 1905. The county’s name honors former Georgia governor Alexander Hamilton Stephens.
Initially inhabited by Mississippian Indians known as “Mound Builders,” and then by Cherokees, the first non-Indians in the area were Revolutionary War veterans, who settled in just after the war. The county’s seat, Toccoa, is a Cherokee word meaning “lovely water.” An interesting place is the 900-foot-high Currahee Mountain, the last mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountain chain, known for its ruggedness and scenic beauty. The early Cherokee Indians who lived in these mountains called them Sah-ka-na’-ga – “The Great Blue Hills of God.
Distinguished by stunning scenery amid mountain peaks, friendly neighborhoods, a national forest, and wildlife preserve lands, it’s little wonder why an estimated 26,000 residents call this place home. From hiking trails to gentle peaks, rushing waters, beautiful lakes, Stephens county has a great deal of allure to nature lovers and adventurers. There are several opportunities for great outdoor experiences like hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, bicycling, and rafting.
Some of the many trout streams that provide excellent fishing adventures include the Panther creek and Toccoa creek upstream from Toccoa waterfalls and the Middle and North Fork Broad River Watershed upstream from their respective flood control structures. Lake Yanoa, Lake Hartwell, Walker Creek, and the Tugaloo river are popular spots for boating, skiing, or swimming.
The region is also known for quality schools, all accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Stephens County School District has three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school serving more than 4,100 students in Avalon, Martin, and Toccoa communities. The schools have a detailed curriculum beyond maths and sciences to extracurricular leadership knowledge like computer instruction to modern literature. At the same time, Stephens County High School has been honored as a National School of Excellence.
